After two months in Russian captivity, Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance soldier Lilia, known by her call sign Butterfly, finally returns home. Her family, friends and husband are waiting for her, but the life she once knew no longer feels familiar. She struggles with memories of violence, avoids her husband’s touch and finds it difficult to speak about what happened to her.
The news of her pregnancy brings everything she has tried to leave behind crashing back. While those around her have their own ideas about what she should do, Lilia faces a decision that only she can make. The people closest to her want to help, yet even their concern can feel like another demand.
In his feature debut, director Maksym Nakonechnyi moves between the present and fragments of Lilia’s memories, allowing us to glimpse what she cannot put into words. BUTTERFLY VISION is a quietly powerful drama about the aftermath of violence, the distance that trauma can create between people and a woman’s struggle to reclaim control over her body and future.
